RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the push out bond strength (POBS) of a syringe-mixed resin sealer and a premixed bioceramic sealer to root dentin exposed to different gutta-percha (GP) solvents and to determine the mode of failure. METHODS: A total of 200 horizontal root slices (1 mm thickness) were prepared up to size 40, 0.04 taper and randomly divided into four main groups based on solvent (Endosolv, orange oil, chloroform) and control (saline), then subdivided into two subgroups based on sealer type (AH Plus Jet and iRoot SP). Samples were exposed to respective solvents for 5 minutes and after the final rinsing, canal spaces were filled with either AH Plus Jet or iRoot SP. POBS test was performed 2 weeks after incubation and mode of failure following POBS test was evaluated. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Dunnett post hoc analysis (P< 0.05). Failure mode patterns were categorized as adhesive, cohesive and mixed failures. RESULTS: There was no significant difference (P> 0.05) in POBS between all solvent groups against the control in both AH Plus Jet and iRoot SP groups. Regardless of the use of solvents, AH Plus Jet group had significantly higher bond strength (P< 0.001) compared to iRoot SP group. The predominant mode of failure was mixed failure in all groups irrespective of type of sealer and exposure to solvents. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This study showed that exposure to gutta-percha solvents (chloroform, orange oil and Endosolv) for 5 minutes did not affect the bond strengths of both iRoot SP (bioceramic sealer) and AH Plus (resin sealer) to root dentin.

INTRODUCTION: Biological characterization of root canal sealers is important as it assesses the ability of the root canal sealer to exert antimicrobial properties thus avoiding treatment failures caused by microbial challenge and also assess the cytotoxic effect on the periapical tissues. Assessment of the biological testing of root canal sealers necessitates the sterilisation of the materials prior to evaluation. This study aims to analyse the influence of various sterilisation techniques conducted prior to biological testing on the microstructure and surface properties of endodontic sealers. Assessment of the initial microbial contamination on the material was also undertaken. METHODS: Four commercial sealers were investigated. The sealers were either prepared in a laminar flow cabinet or on a laboratory bench top under ambient conditions. Each group was further divided into 5 groups (n = 3) based on the sterilization technique:1) ethanol-10 mins, 2) ultraviolet-1 h, 3) ethanol-10 mins + ultraviolet-1 h, 4) autoclave, and 5) no sterilisation (control). Microbial levels in the materials were assessed by plate streaking technique. The materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, before and after sterilisation, to assess any changes in microstructure and chemical composition. RESULTS: All the materials did not exhibit contamination when prepared in laminar flow chamber in sterile conditions compared with sealers prepared on the bench top. Three of the commercial materials showed changes in microstructure while one (TotalFill) was not affected by the sterilisation. AH Plus and BioRoot RCS exhibited alterations in water and alcohol peaks in FT-IR while the single syringe sealers (TotalFill and BioRoot Flow) showed no changes. CONCLUSIONS: Sterilisation methods cause physical and chemical alterations to sealers. Material preparation should be performed in a laminar flow cabinet and a test for sterility should be performed prior to any biological testing being undertaken. If the materials are not sterile, assessment of the effects of the sterilization methods is recommended.

INTRODUCTION: Root canal sealing materials play a crucial role in an endodontic procedure by forming a bond between the dentinal walls and the gutta-percha. The current study aims to analyse the dentinal tubule penetration and adhesive pattern, including the push-out bond strength of six commercially available root canal sealers. METHODOLOGY: Eighty-four mandibular first premolars were split into seven groups (and n = 12), Group 1: Dia-Root, Group 2: One-Fil, Group 3: BioRoot RCS, Group 4: AH Plus, Group 5: CeraSeal, Group 6: iRoot SP, Group 7: GP without sealer (control). Two groups were made, one for dentinal tubule penetration and the other for push-out bond strength; the total sample size was one hundred sixty-eight. Root canal treatment was performed using a method called the crown down technique, and for obturation, the single cone technique was used. A confocal laser scanning microscope (Leica, Microsystem Heidel GmbH, Version 2.00 build 0585, Germany) was used to evaluate dentinal tubule penetration, and Universal Testing Machine was utilised to measure the push-out bond strength (Shimadzu, Japan) using a plunger size of 0.4 mm and speed of 1mm/min. Finally, the adhesive pattern of the sealers was analysed by HIROX digital microscope (KH-7700). Statistical analysis was carried out by a one-way Anova test, Dunnet's T3 test, and Chi-square test. RESULTS: Highest dentinal tubule penetration was noticed with One-Fil (p<0.05), followed by iRoot SP, CeraSeal, AH Plus, Dia-Root also, the most negligible value was recorded for BioRoot RCS. Meanwhile, BioRoot RCS (p<0.05) demonstrated the greater value of mean push-out bond strength, followed by One-fil, iRoot SP, CeraSeal, AH Plus and Dia-Root. Regarding adhesive pattern, most of the samples were classified as type 3 and type 4 which implies greater sealing ability and better adherence to the dentinal wall. However, BioRoot RCS revealed the most type 4 (p<0.05), followed by AH Plus, One-Fil, CeraSeal and Dia-Root. CONCLUSION: The highest dentinal tubule penetration was shown by One-Fil compared to other groups. Meanwhile, BioRoot RCS had greater push-out bond strength and more adhesive pattern than other tested materials.

AIM: To evaluate the bond strength (BS) and analysis of the adhesive interface in root canals filled with bioceramic gutta percha sealers and cones. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ninety-six maxillary canines were divided into eight groups according to the endodontic sealer (AH Plus, AH Plus Bioceramic, Bio-C Sealer or Bio-C Sealer Ion+ and gutta percha cones (conventional or bioceramic) tested. They were analyzed using the BS test, failure pattern, analysis of the adhesive interface by scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The BS data were compared between groups using the analysis of variance test with the Turkey post-test. The chi-square test was used to assess the type of failure and the non-parametric Mann-Whitney and Kruse-Wallis tests (P < 0.05). RESULTS: Analysis of variance showed higher BS values for the groups of bioceramic gutta percha cones in Bio-C Sealer Ion+ (8.38 ± 4.27), AH Plus Bioceramic (6.19 ± 3.28), Bio-C Sealer (5.70 ± 3.18), AH Plus (4.61 ± 2.11) and for conventional gutta percha cones in AH Plus sealers (4.26 ± 2.35), Bio-C Sealer Ion + (3.63 ± 2.29), Bio-C Sealer (2.94 ± 2.32) and AH Plus Bioceramic (1.19 ± 0.89) (P < 0.05). Relative to the type of failure and adaptation of the types of filling material, a higher percentage of mixed failures was observed (gaps between 1 µm-10 µm) for the group with bioceramic gutta percha cones (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The bond between sealers and bioceramic gutta percha cones showed higher bond strength values and greater penetration into the dentin tubules. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The filling the root canal system with bioceramic sealers should be associated with bioceramic gutta percha cones.

Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo comparar a qualidade da obturação e a resistência de união de dois cimentos endodônticos, AH Plus e Bio-C Sealer, em dentes humanos e bovinos. Métodos: Os canais radiculares de 60 dentes unirradiculares [30 humanos (H) e 30 bovinos (B)] foram preparados e obturados por condensação lateral da guta-percha e AH Plus (grupos AP-H e AP-B) ou Bio-C Sealer (grupos BC-H e BC-B). Seis fatias de 1,5 mm de espessura foram obtidas de cada raiz. Os espécimes foram observados em estereomicroscópio para avaliar a qualidade da obturação, considerando possíveis espaços vazios no material obturador. Posteriormente, as fatias radiculares foram avaliadas em termos de resistência de união por push-out e modo de falha. Os dados foram analisados pelos testes de Mann-Whitney e coeficientes de correlação de Spearman (α=5%). Resultados: A qualidade de obturação fornecida por AP e BC foi semelhante em ambos os substratos de dentina. No entanto, ao comparar dentes humanos e bovinos, os escores de espaços vazios foram maiores nas amostras bovinas, para ambos os cimentos. AP teve maior resistência de união à dentina humana e bovina do que BC. No entanto, não houve diferença significativa na resistência de união entre os substratos dentinários, para ambos os cimentos testados. Além disso, houve uma correlação positiva e moderada entre os valores de resistência de união de dentes humanos e bovinos. O modo de falha misto foi o mais prevalente. Conclusão: AP e BC fornecem qualidade de obturação semelhante, mas o primeiro apresenta maiores valores de resistência de união à dentina humana e bovina. A utilização de dentes bovinos como substitutos de amostras humanas parece ser adequada em estudos relacionados à resistência de união, mas não naqueles que testam a qualidade da obturação endodôntica.(AU)


Objective: This study aimed to compare the filling quality and bond strength of two endodontic sealers, AH Plus and Bio-C Sealer, in human and bovine teeth. Methods: The root canals of 60 [30 human (H) and 30 bovine (B)] single-rooted teeth were prepared and filled by lateral condensation of gutta-percha and AH Plus (groups AP-H and AP-B) or Bio-C Sealer (groups BC-H and BC-B). Six 1.5-mm-thick slices were obtained from each root. The specimens were observed under a stereomicroscope to assess filling quality, considering possible voids within the filling material. Subsequently, root slices were evaluated in terms of push-out bond strength and failure mode. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney tests and Spearman correlation coefficients (α=5%). Results: The filling quality provided by AP and BC was similar in both dentin substrates. However, when comparing human and bovine teeth, void scores were greater in the bovine samples, for both sealers. AP had higher bond strength to human and bovine dentin than BC. However, there was no significant difference in bond strength between dentin substrates, for both sealers tested. Also, there was a positive and moderate correlation between the bond strength values of human and bovine teeth. The mixed failure mode was the most prevalent. Conclusion: AP and BC provide similar filling quality, but the first presents higher bond strength values to human and bovine dentin. The use of bovine teeth as substitutes for human samples seems adequate in studies related to bond strength, but not in those testing root canal filling quality.(AU)

OBJECTIVES: The introduction of hydraulic cement sealers has increased the popularity of single cone obturation where the chemistry and properties of hydraulic cement sealers are crucial. This article has investigated the materials present on the market by reviewing the chemistry aiming at understanding whether these materials are optimized or have been tested appropriately. METHODOLOGY: A market search on materials called bioceramic and hydraulic sealers was undertaken. The safety data sheet and manufacturer details for every material were searched and the components were checked. The literature was searched for information about the properties of these materials based on their composition. RESULTS: The safety data sheets and manufacturer details were imprecise with some manufacturers providing little detail on composition. From the publications reviewed, it is apparent that the materials used clinically are not optimized, and there is little evidence that the material chemistry and presentation aid the clinical technique in any way. CONCLUSIONS: There has been a rapid increase in materials identifying as bioceramics on the market. These materials have diverse chemistries, and some of the constituents are not declared. This may affect the clinical performance of these materials. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Smart materials developed on the clinical need which are appropriately tested are necessary for a paradigm shift in root canal obturation. It is important to use reputable materials that have been adequately researched in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the extrusion bond strength (EBS) of gutta-percha to radicular dentin sealed with bioceramic sealers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty human-extracted mandibular premolars were used in the present study, being decoronated up to the cementoenamel junction, and secured in heat cure acrylic resin for root canal therapy. The specimens were randomly divided into groups based on conventional [2.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) + 17% EDTA] and disinfection protocols (2.25% NaOCl + PDT + 17% EDTA) (n = 10). Specimens in groups 1, 3, 5: conventional treatment modality (2.25% NaOCl + 17% EDTA). Samples in groups 2, 4, 6: adjunctive PDT treatment modality (2.25% NaOCl+ PDT+ 17% EDTA). Specimens in groups 1 and 2 were sealed with AH Plus sealer (AH). Specimens in groups 3 and 4 were sealed using Endo Sequence BC sealer, and samples in groups 5 and 6 were sealed with MTA Fillapex. All specimens were cut in the coronal and middle segments and positioned in a universal testing machine (UTM) for assessment of extrusion bond strength (EBS). ANOVA and Post-Hoc Tukey multiple comparison tests were applied for performing statistical analysis (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Coronal root samples in group 1 (2.25% NaOCl + 17% EDTA) sealed with AH Plus sealer demonstrated the highest EBS value (9.21 ± 0.62 MPa) whereas the middle-third of specimens in group 6 (2.25% NaOCl + PDT + 17% EDTA) sealed with MTA Fillapex exhibited the lowest EBS value (5.07 ± 0.17 MPa). Intergroup comparison revealed that group 3 (2.25% NaOCl + 17% EDTA) sealed with Endo Sequence BC Sealer and group 5 (2.25% NaOCl + 17% EDTA) sealed with MTA Fillapex disclosed comparable EBS results to group 1 (p > 0.05) while group 2 (2.25% NaOCl + PDT + 17% EDTA) sealed with AH Plus sealer and group 4 (2.25% NaOCl + PDT + 17% EDTA) sealed with Endo Sequence BC Sealer unveiled analogous EBS values to group 6 (2.25% NaOCl + PDT + 17% EDTA) MTA Fillapex (p > 0.05). The most noticeable failure mode in the coronal and middle thirds of non-PDT subjected groups was cohesive. CONCLUSIONS: Combination of 2.25% NaOCl with PDT  and 17% EDTA for canal disinfection with AH Plus sealer, calcium silicate sealer, and MTA-based bioceramic sealers have an unfavorable effect on the EBS of gutta-percha to the root canal wall.

Implant-associated infections (IAI) are great challenges to medical healthcare and human wellness, yet current clinical treatments are limited to the use of antibiotics and physical removal of infected tissue or the implant. Inspired by the protein/membrane complex structure and its generation of reactive oxygen species in the mitochondria respiration process of immune cells during bacteria invasion, we herein propose a metal/piezoelectric nanostructure embedded on the polymer implant surface to achieve efficient piezocatalysis for combating IAI. The piezoelectricity-enabled local electron discharge and the induced oxidative stress generated at the implant-bacteria interface can efficiently inhibit the activity of the attachedStaphylococcus aureusby cell membrane disruption and sugar energy exhaustion, possess high biocompatibility, and eliminate the subcutaneous infection by simply applying the ultrasound stimulation. For further demonstration, the treatment of root canal reinfection with simplified procedures has been achieved by using piezoelectric gutta-percha implanted in ex vivo human teeth. This surface-confined piezocatalysis antibacterial strategy, which takes advantage of the limited infection interspace, easiness of polymer processing, and noninvasiveness of sonodynamic therapy, has potential applications in IAI treatment.

Compared with cold lateral condensation and continuous wave of condensation which are classically used in clinical, newly emerging single-cone obturation technique is easy-to-operate as well as time-saving. Especially when combined with bioceramic root canal sealers of improved physicochemical and biological properties, single-cone obturation technique showed satisfactory short-term outcomes in clinical observations. However, difficulties still exist in avoiding the root canal overfilling and in operating the retreatment. Besides, the long-term effects of single-cone obturation with bioceramic sealers still remain unclear. This article makes an overview on the history and development of single-cone obturation ,and provides analysis of its pros and corns. Furthermore, we would also like to summarize its clinical application and look into its future improvements.

Background: A successful root canal (RC) treatment depends upon creation of a fluid impervious seal that is commonly built by using a RC sealer along with gutta-percha. The bond strength of the RC sealer is a hallmark as it will minimize the risk of treatment failure by reducing the possibility of filling detachment from dentin. Aim: To evaluate and compare the push-out bond strength of AH-Plus and MTA-Fillapex with Gutta-Percha and Epiphany Self Etch/Resilon system using the Universal Testing Machine. Materials and Method: About 60 mandibular premolars with single canals were prepared apically with Hyflex CM files upto size #30. Out of total, 20 teeth were obturated with AH-Plus/GP (group 1), 20 with MTA-Fillapex/GP (group 2), and other 20 with Epiphany Self Etch/Resilon system (group 3). Teeth were sectioned into three slices of 2 mm each and were subjected to Universal Testing Machine. Statistical Analysis: The data obtained were tabulated and statistically evaluated using SPSS version 21.0 statistical analysis software (IBM, Chicago, Illinois, USA). Results: The mean push-out bond strength was highest for AH-Plus (14.32 MPa) followed by MTA-Fillapex (12.18 MPa) and then Epiphany SE (8.44 MPa). The results were statistically significant. Conclusion: Significantly, higher push out bond strength was displayed by AH-Plus sealer than MTA-Fillapex and least being Epiphany SE sealer. The push out bond strength was significantly highest at apical third and lowest at coronal third.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of the heat-based obturation technique on the push-out bond strength of the classical bioceramic and new HiFlow sealer. Fifty single-rooted human mandibular premolars were obturated using one of the following techniques: (1) BC-SC; (2) BC-W; (3) HiFlow-SC; (4) HiFlow-W; and (5) AH Plus-W. Following obturation, specimens were sectioned into 1-mm-thick root slices 4 and 8 mm from the working length and were subjected to a push-out bond test using a universal testing machine and examined for their modes of failure under an inverted phase-contrast microscope. At both distances tested, there was no difference in the push-out bond strength among the four bioceramic groups (P > 0.05). The AH Plus-W group had lower bond strength than every other group at both distances from the working length. The most common failure mode was mixed failure.

The effects of alkaline pH on the size and surface characteristics of gutta-percha were studied. Forty ProTaper Universal-F2 gutta-percha cones (GPC) were stored individually for 8-weeks. GPC were distributed into 2 groups (n = 20) based on the storage solutions' pH (pH7, pH12). The GPC volume was measured after 1,2,3,4 and 8-weeks using water displacement method and compared to the baseline volume. The surfaces of representative GPCs were analysed using Raman spectroscopy and assessed later using Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Samples t test was used to compare the change in volume of GPC and a repeated measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the effects of storage durations. After 8-weeks, GPCs aged in high-pH exhibited significant drop in their volume (16%) compared with GPCs aged in water (2.5%). The surface of GPCs stored in water or high-pH both demonstrated structural and chemical alterations in comparison with non-aged GPCs.

Besides, the long-term effects of single-cone obturation with bioceramic sealers still remain unclear. This article makes an overview on the history and development of single-cone obturation ,and provides analysis of its pros and corns. Furthermore, we would also like to summarize its clinical application and look into its future improvements.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the push out bond strength of a glass fibre post to root dentine pretreated with 6.5% proanthocyanidin (PAC) and 0.02% phytosphingosine (PHS). METHODS: Thirty-three freshly extracted single rooted human teeth were decoronated to a length of 14 mm. Root canals were prepared using rotary NiTi files and obturated with gutta percha and resin sealer. Post space was prepared using peeso reamers, retaining 5 mm of apical gutta percha. Following smear layer removal and acid etching of the post space, samples were randomly assigned to 3 groups based on the dentine pretreatment, namely the control (no pretreatment) group, 6.5% PAC group, and 0.02% PHS group. A glass fibre post was luted using a dual cure adhesive and luting cement. 1 mm thick root slices were sectioned from coronal, middle and apical levels of the post and their push out bond strength was evaluated using a universal testing machine. Data was analysed with one-way ANOVA and Games-Howell post hoc test (P<0.05). RESULTS: At all levels, PHS showed higher push out bond strength than PAC and control groups, with a significant difference between the experimental groups at the middle and apical thirds (P<0.05). The push out bond strength of PAC group was significantly higher than the control group in the coronal and apical thirds (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Both PAC and PHS improved the push out bond strength of a glass fibre post to dentine.

RESUMO

Post-treatment coronal hermetic seal of the root canal opening prevents the food or saliva which assist to achieve successful endodontic treatment. Gutta-percha is filled in the inner canal, that is, from cervical third to apical third. Gutta-percha does not provide the hermetic seal because it does not bound with dentine walls. Various new restorative materials have been developed in the last 6-7 decade but drawback related to the polymerization shrinkage of the composite resin remains a clinical problem. In general, dental composites having volumetric shrinkage of the material depends on its formulation and curing conditions. In this article, the effect of this polymerization shrinkage on the tooth structure has been studied.

This scoping review study aimed to map the evidence about solvents' use for gutta-percha dissolution and removal during endodontic retreatments. The study protocol followed the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines, available online (https://osf.io/5vy8n/). Reporting was based on PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews. We selected dentistry studies that considered the effectiveness of solvents in gutta-percha dissolution in endodontic retreatments and compared their performance to the use of instrumentation techniques without solvents. The search and study screening were performed in PubMed and Scopus databases by two independent researchers. A descriptive analysis considered the study design, method/technique used for obturation, method/technique used for instrumentation during retreatment, solvent solutions tested, exposure time, and main findings. A total of 41 studies were included. Despite that, most studies suggested that solvents' use may complicate root canal cleanliness, regardless of the type of instrumentation used, and facilitate the presence of gutta-percha remnants in the root surface. Thus, the use of solvents should be avoided and its use should only be considered if the previous working length was not possible to access without it. Despite that, high heterogeneity was observed, further studies are still encouraged comparing the performance and effects of different solvents in different clinical scenarios.

The present study evaluated the quality of single-cone root canal fillings with bioceramic (BC) sealer using three different techniques by means of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). The canals of 30 extracted single-rooted permanent teeth were shaped with R40 Reciproc blue files and filled with the single-cone technique (SCT). BioRoot RCS BC sealer was placed inside the canals with one of the following master cones: R40 cone to working length (RWL, n = 10); R40 cone trimmed 1 mm short of working length (RWL-1, n = 10); non-standardized gutta-percha cone to working length (NSWL, n = 10). A quantitative and qualitative micro-CT analysis assessed the filling quality and internal/external voids formation. Collected data underwent statistical analysis by multivariate one-way analysis of variance (α = 0.05). In all groups, the voids were minimal and prevalently external. The NSWL and RWL-1 groups had increased sealer ratios in the whole canal and the apical canal portion, respectively. The lowest amounts of voids were found in the RWL group; the void volumes were slightly greater in the RWL-1 mm and NSWL groups, especially at the apical level. Two alternative SCTs showed satisfactory filling ability, uniform distribution of the BC sealer, and a minimally increased voids formation compared to the standard SCT with dedicated cone. The two tested alternative SCTs could take advantage of the beneficial characteristics of the BC sealer, which evenly filled the endodontic space, ideally sealing both the major and the accessory communications with the periodontium.

The sealers used for root canal treatment should be biocompatible for the peri-radicular tissues, to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of GuttaFlow® bioseal sealer and to compare them with AH26® epoxy resin. Culture media were conditioned with the GuttaFlow® bioseal and AH26® pellets. MDPC-23 odontoblast cell cultures were treated with conditioned medium and serial dilutions. To evaluate the metabolic activity and cellular viability, the MTT and SRB assays were performed. To determine the production of reactive oxygen species, the DHE and DCF-DA probes were used. Cell cycle and cell-death types were assessed by cytometry, and to evaluate the mineralization capacity, the Alizarin Red S coloration was used. Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) when normality was found and Kruskal-Wallis on the opposite case. For the comparison with normality values, the Student t-test was used. Cells exposed to the GuttaFlow® bioseal conditioned medium maintained high metabolic activities, except at higher concentrations. Likewise, viability was maintained, but a significant decrease was observed after exposure to the highest concentration (p < 0.001), associated with cell death by late apoptosis and necrosis. When cell cultures were exposed to AH26®, metabolic activity was highly compromised, resulting in cell death. An imbalance in the production of peroxides and superoxide anion was observed. GuttaFlow® bioseal showed higher biocompatibility than AH26®.

BACKGROUND: An optimum bonding between the sealer and dentin is important for impermeable root canal filling and many procedures were applied to improve root canal dentin and in turn the bond strength between the sealer and dentine. There is lack of sufficient data on the effect of nonthermal plasma application on the bond strength of sealers to the root canal dentin. AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of NAP on the push-out bond strength (PBS) of a bioceramic and resin-based root canal sealer (RCS) to root canal dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty single-rooted mandibular premolars were decoronated. After preparation and final irrigation, the specimens were divided into four groups (n = 10). Group AH: Root canals were filled with gutta-percha (GP) and AH Plus RCS, Group P-AH: Root canals were filled with GP and AH Plus RCS following the NAP application, Group BC: Root canals were filled with GP and Endosequence BC RCS, and Group P-BC: Root canals were filled with GP and Endosequence BC RCS following the NAP application. Then roots were sectioned horizontally to obtain ~1 mm thick dentin disks. PBS test was performed to the second (coronal) and fourth (middle) slices. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis and t-test. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference among the groups for both coronal and middle regions (P < 0.05). P-BC group showed higher PBS than AH and P-AH groups in the coronal region. P-BC group showed higher PBS than the other groups in the middle region. CONCLUSIONS: The use of NAP did not influence the push-out bond strength of AH-Plus sealer to the root canal dentin. The Endosequence-BC sealer showed a better bond strength than the AH-Plus sealer after NAP application.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the fracture resistance of simulated immature roots using Biodentine (BD) and fiber post (FP) compared with different root canal-filling materials under aging conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and forty maxillary central anterior teeth were randomly divided into seven groups (n = 20/group). Negative control received no treatment. In the other groups, the root canals were prepared to simulate immature teeth. The root canals were filled with a 4-mm apical plug of BD and restored intraradicular with BD, BD + FP, composite resin (CR), CR + FP, and gutta-percha (GP). Positive controls were instrumented but without restoration. Teeth were subjected to thermocycling and received cyclic loading before fracture resistance test. Fracture resistance was conducted using a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min until fracture. Load to fracture was recorded in newtons (N). Data were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test at P < 0.05. RESULTS: Root canals restored intraradicular with BD + FP and CR + FP showed the highest fracture resistance compared with the other experimental groups (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the fracture resistance between CR and BD groups (P = 0.998). GP and positive control groups were significantly lower resistance to fracture than the other groups (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Intraradicular reinforcement with BD + FP and CR + FP enhanced the fracture resistance of simulated immature teeth than the other experimental groups. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Biodentine or composite resin combined with fiber post could be used to reinforce immature teeth with an apical Biodentine plug.
